This traditional spiritual is also known as "Hold On" and has been arranged by many composers throughout the years. This title and rendition is used very often as a protest song during civil rights movement here in the US. Reverend Dr. Calvin O. Butts III asked me to sing this song for a panel presentation at SUNY Old Westbury at which he and Representative John Lewis were speaking. This request allowed me to get better acquainted with this song’s message as it pertains to justice. I decided to include it on my project because we need the power and message this song conjures now and always! In our presentation, we use foot stomps to rhythmically simulate the march to the prize of justice, peace, and equality. We also add hums which confirm and in some cases precede the sung text and act as an ancestral voice supporting and encouraging us in our mission to "Keep our Eyes on the Prize" for as many generations as it takes to achieve the humanity we all deserve.
